Looking back: In A Dark Wood
In A Dark Wood: Words and Images of Mental Illness Across a Century was a collaboration between professional photographer Dr Andy Brown, Professor Brendan Stone from the School of English/Storying Sheffield, Archive Sheffield, and Sheffield Libraries.
The project aimed to explore changing perceptions of mental distress and illness through contemporary verbal accounts and photographic archive material.
The team produced an audio visual exhibition, juxtaposing projected portrait photographs from the early 1900s of patients from the former Middlewood Hospital in Sheffield, with a contemporary audio track that combined reflections on the nature of illness, distress and care with an atmospheric and discordant soundscape. This was exhibited at Bank Street Arts from 15 to 25 September 2016 for Festival of the Mind.
“Very impressed with In a Dark Wood. Incredibly powerful selection of images and voices with a wonderful atmospheric soundtrack.” Audience member
