Lizzie the elephant

Elephants in Entertainment

To celebrate the Sheffield Herd project, Professor Vanessa Toulmin looks at the history of the circus elephant and the reasons behind its decline in popularity.

The true stories of incredible animals such as Maharajah, the elephant who walked from Edinburgh to Manchester, and Sheffield’s own Lizzie Ward, are fascinating and moving.

Professor Vanessa Toulmin is Director of City and Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield, Research Director of the National Fairground Archive, and curator of Festival of the Mind.
