“We step out of our solar system, into the universe, seeking only peace and friendship...
So says the message from the human race on the Voyager spacecraft. But is there, y'know, anyone out there? I really wanted to know, so I went to speak to an astrophysicist to find out. This is what I found out: Stellar Wobble. The Mirror Test. The Drake Equation. Fermi’s Paradox. The Enhanced Human and murderous dolphins.”
Professor Simon Goodwin is an astrophysicist. Alexander Kelly is a theatre maker. They started talking to each other in 2006 – a conversation about the Search for Extra Terrestrial Civilisations – that has continued over the years and fed directly into three performance and film projects by Alex’s company, Third Angel. The most recent, 600 People, is currently on tour in the UK and internationally, and is the most collaborative project yet
For Is There Anybody Out There? they will present Third Angel’s show 600 People followed by a Q&A in which they will unpick this accidental collaboration and talk about whether there are any space aliens out there in our galaxy, faith and belief, passion and emotion in both art and science.
Writer/performer Alexander Kelly is the co-founder, with Rachael Walton, of he contemporary theatre company Third Angel. The company has taken its productions around the UK, and to Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
Professor Simon Goodwin has been talking to Alexander about space travel and aliens since 2006. He’s a reader in theoertical astrophysics at the University of Sheffield.
